This book is talking about the events when Jerusalem was judged in 586 B.C. The dictionary definition of “lament” is a passionate expression of grief. Lamentations is truly a fitting name for this book. Jeremiah is believed to be the author of Lamentations. Jeremiah begins by saying how sad Jerusalem and he have become. Their friends have become their enemies and there is no one to comfort the people of Jerusalem. Verse 17 says “there is no one to comfort her (Zion)”. Jeremiah says God has punished the people because they have “sinned greatly”.
